Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 4/30/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

J.J. McCarthy is the biggest winner from the 2024 NFL Draft by a mile – SB Nation
Winner: Philadelphia Eagles. Water is wet. The Eagles win again. It was a big weekend for teams in Pennsylvania, as the Eagles join their cousins in the west to dominate the board once more. Their back-to-back DB picks of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean fix the biggest issue the Eagles have been having in their defense. This is a team without a ton of holes, and yet somehow they managed to plug all of them once more, picking value in the process, and trading around the board to amass more future draft capital. Cap it all off with the feel-good pick of Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 5th and this was just a monster haul.

Eagles 2024 NFL Draft class analysis – BGN
Eagles Outlook: Admittedly, I was higher on Johnny Wilson than he was drafted, meaning I have some optimism he could push for a role as a rookie. The Eagles WR3 spot is going to be up for grabs with veterans DeVante Parker and Parris Campbell competing with the rookies for snaps. While Wilson will have to battle with more established players this summer, it’s hard not to love the idea of a 6’7” receiver playing slot with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith on the outside.

Eagles add OT – Iggles Blitz
The key to this whole situation is that Becton isn’t coming to Philly to start. He will battle for the #3 OT job. That takes some pressure off him and allows him to learn and develop. Still, there is no guarantee this move will work. In a league desperate for OTs, Becton was unsigned for a reason. Howie Roseman loves to talk about how the Eagles are always looking for help. He and the front office never feel like there is a final roster. Always look for ways to improve. Howie admitted the top part of the draft didn’t go quite as expected. He was surprised that the Eagles didn’t come away with an OL earlier than the fifth round. The team added bodies for the interior, but lacked a swing tackle. So they went and got Becton. Fred Johnson was the top backup at OT. He looked good last summer, but he hasn’t started since he was with the Bengals in 2021. Would you trust him if one of the starters got hurt? The Eagles signed Darian Kinnard after the season and he could be the backup RT, but he’s only played in one NFL game. While Becton isn’t a sure thing, he has talent and experience. That makes him a player worth taking a chance on.

Judging overreactions to 2024 NFL draft picks, team classes – ESPN+
The Eagles have overtaken the Cowboys and will win the NFC East in 2024. Verdict: NOT AN OVERREACTION. There are very few things I believe in more strongly than the NFC East repeat curse. No one has won the division in back-to-back seasons since the Andy Reid Eagles did it in 2003-04. Something bizarre always happens. Who saw the Eagles completely falling apart last season after a 10-1 start? Well, anyone who knows about the curse did, since Philly won the division the year before. So no, it is absolutely not an overreaction to believe Dallas won’t repeat as division champs in 2024. Nobody does. There’s nothing the Cowboys can do about it. It’s bigger than all of us. Heck, the Commanders or Giants could win the division next season. All we know for sure is that it won’t be the Cowboys. For the record, though, the curse is the only reason I didn’t write OVERREACTION here. I have no issue with the Cowboys’ draft to this point, and their quiet free agency fits their pattern and philosophy. You have to be who you are, and the Cowboys have gone 12-5 each of the past three seasons, so they’re doing something right.

2024 NFL Draft: Ranking favorite picks in every round – NFL.com
JEREMIAH TROTTER JR. I could have included this pick for sentimental reasons alone. The son of the former Eagles Pro Bowl linebacker of the same name brings a physical, instinctual game to Philly. He’s not big (6-foot, 228 pounds) but he finds the ball and gets to it quickly, avoiding blockers and shooting gaps when given the go-ahead. Nakobe Dean and free-agent acquisition Devin White (who signed a one-year deal) dealt with injuries last year, so don’t be shocked if the young Trotter comes in when needed and doesn’t relinquish the job by season’s end. […] DYLAN MCMAHON. McMahon lasted two rounds longer than I expected, but he fits quite well on an Eagles team that needed to at add more bodies along the O-line. His strength and natural bend allow him to anchor against any nose tackle, and his mobility and knowledge of blocking angles negate second-level targets. He’ll be a starter at some point in his career — early on if injuries force him into action, or in a couple of years when free agency thins the depth chart.

Eagles’ Howie Roseman jokes he wanted Daniel Jeremiah to delete prospect’s ranking – Awful Announcing
While the Eagles got their guy, that doesn’t mean Roseman wasn’t nervous. In fact, according to Brandon Lee Gowton of SB Nation’s Bleeding Green, the Eagles’ top decision maker suggested he was nervous a team would take Hunt earlier than 94th based in part on where Jeremiah had him ranked on his big board—64th overall.

Spadaro: What did we learn about the Eagles in the NFL Draft? – PE.com
The approach as the Eagles started their roster building for the 2024 season began in the days that followed a disappointing end to the 2023 campaign, one that started with such promise but ended abruptly with a playoff loss in Tampa. That sting set the tone for where this football team is right now, taking in everything it has done in free agency, through this 2024 NFL Draft Weekend. As the team put together its blueprint for improving the roster for the season to come, Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie, Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman, Head Coach Nick Sirianni, and everyone else who has a hand in shaping the team, came back slugging. “We wanted to have a ‘mentality’ offseason,” Roseman said on Saturday night at the NovaCare Complex after the draft ended and the Eagles looked at what they’d accomplished – nine new draft picks and a history-making eight trades that helped give the team three more selections in the 2025 NFL Draft all following a roster transformation with impact players added in free agency.

Report: Robert Griffin III still “unlikely” to return to ESPN’s Monday night pregame show – PFT
When it was first reported that ESPN is pursuing former Eagles center Jason Kelce, the spot of Robert Griffin III was described as being “in jeopardy.” In today’s report that Kelce is in, Andrew Marchand of TheAthletic.com characterized Griffin’s return as “unlikely.”

3 post-draft moves the Dallas Cowboys should make to complete their roster – Blogging The Boys
RB Javonte Williams. The Denver Broncos running back room is suddenly filled to the gills with talent. They already had Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin atop the depth chart prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, but then added Audric Estime in the fifth-round and Blake Watson as an undrafted free agent. That could make Williams, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, available via trade. Dallas would be wise to check on his availability. Despite the need, the Cowboys bypassed the running back position with each of their eight selections in the 2024 NFL Draft. Free agency offers little to nothing that inspires hope, even Ezekiel Elliott, but Javontae Williams is an intriguing option. He would immediately upgrade the position as Tony Pollard’s replacement. The Cowboys can easily part with a late-draft pick in 2025 to acquire Williams’ services. The 5’10”, 220-pound RB is exactly what they need at the position. He is a true three-down back with the power to pick up the tough yards and the agility and contact balance to pick up chunk yardage down after down. Even if he ends up being a one-year rental he is well worth the investment if they can pry him away from the Broncos.

The Daniel Jones question looms over the future of the New York Giants – Big Blue View
Jones, once he is recovered from his 2023 torn ACL, gets another chance in 2024 to show the Giants he is their guy. That Dave Gettleman was right to select him in 2019 and that Joe Schoen wasn’t foolish to give him that four-year, $160 million contract. Can he? The eventual answer could make a huge difference in both the upcoming season and the long-term future of the franchise. Question is, even though they missed on their top choice as a successor to Jones, were they right in not selecting a quarterback in Round 1?

A very brief review of Washington’s initial wave of 2024 UDFAs – Hogs Haven
Possible Trajectory: A “best case scenario” for Sam Hartman would likely be for Hartman to win the QB3 job over Jeff Driskel and Jake Fromm this season, and to have matured enough to compete for a QB2 role in 2025. He has some clear limitations – like arm strength – that cap his opportunity to ever be a starter.
