The details behind Justin Thomas’ irons and putter selection changes

Justin Thomas has made a few notable tweaks to his bag after a start to the season that has seen him test out several new options.

The result of that testing is a new look setup that Thomas will hope gives him more from his longer irons.

Thomas and Titleist Tour rep J.J. Van Wezenbeeck have evaluated the irons that Thomas has used since the 2023 U.S. Open and come up with a new configuration.

Having used a set of ultra-custom 621.JT blade irons since the US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club, Thomas has decided to make a change to his 4-iron.

Thomas upgraded his 4-iron blade to a somewhat more forgiving T100 model with cavity-back construction. The increased forgiveness of the T100 4-iron worked, and it has been in his bag ever since.

Thomas began testing a T100 5-iron just ahead of this season’s Valspar championship.

He has been on a bent to improve his distance for some time having already brought a new driver in late in the 2023 season.

“I wanted a longer driver option to have,” Thomas said. “I wanted something to where maybe I travel with it every week and it’s like maybe I use it five times a year, maybe I use it once, whatever. It’s just three-fourths of an inch longer, but it’s an instant 2 or 3 mph club speed [increase], and it goes quite a bit further.

“It was just something I wanted to have…we kind of screwed around and [Titleist Tour rep J.J. Van Wezenbeeck] sent me some stuff in the mail, but hadn’t done like a proper fitting for one, because I know my driver’s great. It works how I want it to…I’ve driven it really, really well with the longer driver actually the last two weeks using it.

“So I don’t know. I mean, I’m going to go hit some balls and make a decision. It will be most likely just end up using my gamer, but it’s just something that I’ve — I just wanted to have more than anything, and I was hitting it really good the last couple weeks and I’m like, well, maybe we’ll end up playing this more than we thought, but we’ll see.

“It’s an instant 3 to 5 [mph ball speed increase]. You know, when I hit it hard, hit that hard high one, it’s a 15-yarder, which is a nice thing obviously to have.”

Thomas’ testing of the new T100 5-iron went well but perhaps too well.

He created a new problem for himself in the distance spacing as he was hitting the 5-iron longer.

That prompted Thomas and Van Wezenbeeck to try out a more forgiving Titleist T200 4-iron model, which provided considerably more forgiveness across the face thanks to its hollow-bodied design and greater launch and peak height. Thomas now has a longer 5-iron and even longer 4-iron in his bag.

Thomas’ iron set now includes Titleist 621.JT mid-to-short irons (6-9), a T100 5-iron, and a T200 4-iron.

Thomas is also switching to a new 2024 Phantom X 5.5 putter which has been extensively customized to suit his requirements.

He has been trialing a 2-wood option too but did not deploy the club at Augusta.
