Were the Giants right in bypassing a chance to select a successor in the 2024 NFL Draft

It has been widely reported that the New York Giants made a major offer to move up in the 2024 NFL Draft in an effort to select Drake Maye as a likely successor to Daniel Jones.

That effort, as we know, was for naught. The New England Patriots rejected offers from the Giants and Minnesota Vikings, kept the pick and selected Maye for themselves.

The Nabers’ selection has been widely praised. He is a play-making wide receiver who should be the best one the Giants have had since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2018. It is impossible to argue that getting that kind of player isn’t a good thing.

It is also, though, impossible to ignore that the quarterback question still looms large over both the Giants’ 2024 season and the franchise’s long-term future.

Jones had some impressive moments as a rookie under then-head coach Pat Shurmur in 2019. He was efficient in 2022 in Brian Daboll’s first year as head coach, a big part of the reason the Giants reached the playoffs and ultimately earned their first playoff victory since 2012. Jones’ two years under Joe Judge weren’t impressive. Neither was last season, a year abbreviated by injuries that left a lot to be desired even when he was playing.

Jones, once he is recovered from his 2023 torn ACL, gets another chance in 2024 to show the Giants he is their guy. That Dave Gettleman was right to select him in 2019 and that Joe Schoen wasn’t foolish to give him that four-year, $160 million contract.

Can he? The eventual answer could make a huge difference in both the upcoming season and the long-term future of the franchise.

Question is, even though they missed on their top choice as a successor to Jones, were they right in not selecting a quarterback in Round 1?
