Slayer Legal at Delayed GearBox Tournament

on

Hungrybox is one of the best-known Smash players out there, beyond competing he’s long been organizing tournaments too. Largely for Smash Bros, but the Coinbox series has expanded in recent years to feature other games too. We were expecting to see the GearBox tournament this week, a Guilty Gear Strive version of the event! Unfortunately, we’ve had a bit of a delay though.

Hungrybox has taken to Twitter to announce a change of plans for the Coinbox schedule. While it focuses on Smash esports, we’ve seen it cover different games, and the Gearbox was planned as an event for the GG franchise in the series. We’ve already seen quite a bit of crossover between Guilty Gear and Smash, particularly with some stand-out players in the last year. How will the event work and why has it been pushed back?

GearBox Tournament Brings Strive to Coinbox

Coinbox is a weekly tournament for Smash, but it also features bonus games. In May, there will be a bonus tournament for Guilty Gear Stive instead of Smash Bros! The event will feature a @2,000 prize pool! It’s played online.

Players who take part will join secure matches and compete head-to-head in an online lobby. The winner takes home the lion’s share of the prize pool. The event is all broadcast on Twitch, hosted by Hungrybox. These events are a real highlight for Smash Bros and it’s always great to see more fighters shown off here.

We’ve already seen players cross between Smash and Guilty Gear. Leffen winning EVO’s Guilty Gear Strive tournament was particularly exciting. The GearBox tournament will be a chance to see even more players tackle Guilty Gear.

Tournament Delayed Until June

That’s how the event is going to work, but it won’t be happening as early as originally planned. Hungrybox has announced on Twitter the tournament is getting moved around. It will be delayed until June! There’s a simple reason for the hold-up though, they believe the tournament has been planned too close to GGS at EVO Japan 2024 for comfort.

That event might have happened in Asia but it featured tons of the best international players. Giving them a little time to rest and get prepped for a new tournament will be great for the quality of play. One more nice feature is a new character who will be legal too.

Since the delay is pushing us back quite a bit, there’s now space for Slayer to be legal at the tournament! The character will be available to play for everyone. It’ll be interesting to see if they get much play at GearBox.
