It was one of the most emotional, monumental endings in the history of esports. As the final stages settled during the Six Invitational in Sao Paolo, we saw FaZe Clan and w7m Esports head to the grandest stage in Rainbow Six Siege. This all-Brazilian final was an incredible finish to a remarkable event, and it saw w7m secure serious redemption over last year’s second-place finish, with the team closing out the series 3 – 2 against FaZe Clan and lifting the coveted sledgehammer.
As a collective, the w7m squad walked away from the Ginásio do Ibirapuera one million dollars richer. It was a tale of the ages for w7m – the team was sent crashing into the lower bracket at the earliest opportunity by Wolves but remained resilient, going on to sweep through FearX, Ninjas in Pyjamas, SpaceStation, Soniqs, G2 Esports, Virtus, and finally FaZe Clan. It will go down in the history books as one of the most phenomenal runs ever seen in esports.
The Most Memorable Journey
This was such a unique event that effortlessly proved the power of Rainbow Six esports. During the final stages of the event, we saw a live orchestra take to the stage, and during the tournament, Ubisoft revealed a massive update to the game that had the crowd roaring. It was the most popular esports event in Rainbow Six Siege history, pulling in more than half a million peak concurrent viewers around the world, and that was on top of the 10,000 fans in attendance.
It was a staggering event from start to finish. In the Group Stage, we saw G2 Esports and Soniqs produce perfect records, both refusing to drop a map. From there, the action continued into the Playoffs. As the huge roster of teams started picking each other apart, the power players were outlined very early on. It seemed like FaZe Clan was destined for victory, but a dramatic lower bracket run by w7m Esports ultimately put that dream to rest.
As the dust settled, emotions were running wild. There were scenes of immense sportsmanship between the two Brazilian teams, but that concept peaked between the twin brothers, Felipe ‘nade’ Sá Ferreira and Thiago ‘Handyy’ Sá Ferreira. Following nade’s win with w7m, he walked the stage with his brother – who represents FaZe Clan – holding his hand high and securing a standing ovation from the crowd.
This record-breaking Grand Final was a close-fought clash from start to finish. It looked as though FaZe Clan had it in hand as the opening round on Oregon landed with a 7 – 1 scoreline in FaZe’s favour. However, w7m refused to go down without a fight, going on to dominate the rest of the series and take home the biggest prize in Rainbow Six esports.
It has been a phenomenal twelve months for w7m Esports. The team won the BLAST R6 Major in Copenhagen and then again in Atlanta, and now the squad has scooped the grandest prize of them all.
