Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.
Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.
Rumors for the Day:
- It’s not known if they’ll do anything on-screen during today’s WWE Backlash event, but PW Insider Elite reports that John Cena and Charlotte Flair arrived in France on Thursday.
- Per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, at one point there was an idea for The Rock to beat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 and end his lengthy run as WWE Universal Champion. Dwayne would then “give up the title to go to Hollywood…but always call himself ‘The People’s Champion,’ which is where that idea and belt came in, which was long before the Hall of Fame ceremony.” Roman would then get the WWE Universal championship back, before eventually losing it to Cody Rhodes.
- Some people in WWE were “strongly against” that idea, because Cody is the star who will have to carry the company in 2024 and 2025, and it would “greatly hurt Rhodes’ eventual win” if he wasn’t the first one to beat Reigns for the belt.
- According to Fightful Select, Minnesota is no longer the front runner to host next year’s WrestleMania 41. There’s been a big internal push over the last few months for Las Vegas to host the event. One reason given for this is that higher-ups in WWE don’t want to do another cold weather WrestleMania next year, even if it is indoors.
- WrestleVotes heard that WWE will reveal the brackets for the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments over the next few days. The Raw side of the brackets will be announced during Backlash, while the SmackDown side will be announced during Monday’s episode of Raw.
- Sources told PW Insider that yesterday’s NXT cuts were “primarily made due to the lack of current creative plans” for those wrestlers, and they were also “not planned for anything in the near future.”
- Insider also says that NXT’s Joe Gacy was at WWE headquarters earlier this week, and there’s been internal talk of calling him up to the main roster soon.
- The Observer mentioned that Dominik Mysterio’s elbow injury is expected to keep him out of action for six to eight weeks.
- WWE filed for trademarks on the names Shiloh Hill, Layla Diggs, and Jasper Troy.
