Rory McIlroy is one of those golfers who anticipates unification and hopes that the PGA Tour and PIF can find common ground and finally reach a final agreement. Northern Ireland’s native is optimistic about the future, with the hope that the PGA Tour and PIF leaders will be reasonable and understand that an agreement would be the best thing for golf. Some of his colleagues don’t exactly share the same opinion, but Rory is trying to persuade them.
What particularly delights Rory is that a meeting between PGA Tour players and PIF officials is scheduled in a few days. McIlroy believes that this meeting could have happened much earlier. Many are hopeful that this discussion will bring a positive outcome for the PGA Tour.
“I think it should have happened months ago, so I am glad that it’s happening. Hopefully that progresses conversations and gets us closer to a solution,” McIlroy said, as quoted by golfmonthly.com

PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan will be the key figure in these negotiations. McIlroy believes that players must understand that Rumayyan wants to do the right thing. Although some are not very optimistic about PIF’s intentions, Rumayyan will try to convince some of the golfers that PIF aims to advance golf.
McIlroy believes that LIV and PIF are not one entity as some may think. McIlroy emphasized that he had the opportunity to talk with him and understand that PIF and LIV operate as two different entities.
“I think I’ve said this before, I have spent time with Yasir and his – the people that have represented him in LIV I think have done him a disservice, so Norman and those guys. I see the two entities, and I think there’s a big, I actually think there’s a really big disconnect between PIF and LIV.”
Although Northern Ireland was one of the first to point fingers at LIV Golf and criticize the leaders of this Tour, his stance has rapidly changed in recent months. McIlroy sent a message to those who do not favor LIV Golf, stating that PIF and LIV Golf are not the same. That is one of the reasons why he believes that an agreement must be a priority.
“I think you got PIF over here and LIV are sort of over here doing their own thing. So the closer that we can get to Yasir, PIF and hopefully finalize that investment, I think that will be a really good thing.”- he continued.
McIlroy believes that PIF wants to “park money for decades and not worry about it.” For them, the priority is to invest money where they know they can profit. Rory is aware that the PGA Tour can bring them huge profits, but of course, it is also necessary for them to invest a significant amount of money.

McIlroy explains that PIF wants to support team golf in some form on the calendar, but it doesn’t have to be exactly like LIV Golf. He thinks individual golf should be separate from team golf, with team events happening alongside individual tournaments. But, he says, it will take time to figure everything out.
He mentions that many players have contracts with LIV Golf until 2028 or 2029, so big changes won’t happen right away. He believes LIV Golf will continue as it is for a couple more years while they work things out. LIV Golf executives have big ambitions for the upcoming period, hoping they can progress even further and achieve even greater things. It must be acknowledged that LIV Golf has made progress. They have managed to attract some of the best players.
As for finding a solution, McIlroy says it won’t happen quickly. But if they can get enough money invested, they can start moving towards a compromise. He knows not everyone will be happy with the outcome, but he hopes everyone will understand why they’re making these decisions.
Judging by the statements of many golfers, the priority for most is for golf to progress as a sport, aware that things may not be ideal at the moment. LIV Golf is here, and it’s hard to ignore. PGA Tour players have no choice but to accept things as they are. At this moment, their priority should be how to improve the PGA Tour and attract investors.
They have already succeeded in that. SSG has invested a huge amount of money, which will be significant for them in the future. Time will tell whether it’s possible to find common ground with PIF and how beneficial it is for them to reach an agreement.
