After Spanish golfer Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, emblem of European golf, could be the new target of the Arabian Super League of the greens. The world number 2, long among the main opponents, alongside Tiger Woods, of the LIV Golf, seems to have changed attitude and ideas in recent months. While once stating “I hate LIV Golf,” the Northern Irishman now remains mysterious about his future in the Super League. “Going to LIV? Who knows,” were McIlroy’s words before the Cognizant Classic, a PGA Tour tournament scheduled until March 3rd in Florida.

It all stems from statements made by his former agent, Chubby Chandler, who explained in an interview that “a move to LIV Golf is not to be excluded.” “He might know a lot of things, 10%, half, who knows,” was McIlroy’s response. While he did indeed co-found a technological league with Woods, with an eye on the future, McIlroy also resigned from the policy board of the PGA Tour. Those times when the Northern Irishman stated “rather than play on the LIV, I would retire” seem distant. But the number 2 has changed his mind on other occasions, such as with the Ryder Cup. Shortly after turning professional in 2008, at Gleneagles in Scotland, McIlroy told Chandler, “The Ryder Cup seems to me just an exhibition, I’m here to win Majors.” Then, over the years, the Ryder Cup became for McIlroy the “best competition there can be”.
Rory McIlroy, born on May 4, 1989, in Holywood, Northern Ireland, is a professional Northern Irish golfer. From a young age, he quickly gained attention for his golfing talents, initially as an amateur where he won the Junior Ryder Cup in 2004, participated in the Walker Cup in 2007, represented Ireland at the Eisenhower Trophy in 2006, and won five tournaments including the European Amateur Championship in 2006 (as well as the European Amateur Team Championship in 2007). He turned professional in September 2007 at the age of 18.
He secured his first victory on the European PGA Tour at the Dubai Desert Classic in February 2009 and then his first victory on the American circuit the following year at the Quail Hollow Championship. After two third-place finishes in major tournaments, in 2009 at the PGA Championship and in 2010 at the Masters, he claimed his first major title at the 2011 US Open.
Rory McIlroy first became the world’s top-ranked golfer on March 4, 2012, at the age of 22, 43 days after winning the Honda Classic, a PGA Tour event in Palm Beach Gardens. On August 12, 2012, he became the first Northern Irishman in history to win the PGA Championship. He also became the first Briton to win this event since Tommy Armour in 1930.
In 2014, he secured his third major tournament victory by winning The Open Championship, followed by a fourth at the PGA Championship. In the same year, he won the Ryder Cup for the second consecutive time, playing with the European team against the United States.
In 2019, following a successful season in the United States, notably winning the FedEx Cup, the Northern Irish golfer was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year.
