Stanford’s Joshua Karty should be the presumptive favorite to win Rams kicker job

The Los Angeles Rams drafted Stanford kicker Joshua Karty with the 33rd pick of the sixth round, 213th overall. Karty could be the top kicker prospect in the draft and Blaine Grisak noted him as his favorite kicker of the 2024 class.

Lastly, we’ll get into special teams. Cam Little has been my favorite kicker through this draft process. Joshua Karty may be the consensus number one kicker, but Little isn’t that far behind and is better than Will Reichard. Anthony Gould is going to be a solid pro. As the fourth wide receiver on a roster and a punt returner, he makes a lot of sense.

It’s a rare investment of any kind in the kicker position by Les Snead and Sean McVay, adding Karty to a position that only had former undrafted free agent Tanner Brown on the roster.

On the Rams

Karty should be the favorite to win the kicking job this season, but drafting kickers is no science. As JB Scott wrote recently, analytics says drafting a kicker may be of no use.

The Rams have commonly been linked to players such as Alabama’s Will Reichard, Missouri’s Harrison Mevis (“the thicker kicker”), and Stanford’s Joshua Karty.

But don’t tell that to Rams fans who came together to make a mock draft getting Karty for the team in the seventh round. Jake Ellenbogen also had Karty to the Rams in his final mock draft for the Rams of 2024.

The Rams add a kicker to the roster and finally do something the fans wanted in the draft.
