Philip Rivers was always the biggest competitor on the Chargers during his tenure and that hasn’t changed now that he’s training future NFL passers.

Philip Rivers hasn’t suited up for an NFL game since the 2020 season with the Colts, but the former face of the Chargers franchise is still keeping himself in performing shape while training some of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft.

In a recent interview with ESPN’s Kevin Clark, North Carolina’s Drake Maye admitted that him and his fellow trainees are still being taken to school by the elder Rivers. Per Maye, Rivers is still managing to best the group in throwing competitions, specifically one of his favorites from his time with the Bolts: throwing out routes into the net.

If you can recall all those joint practices with the Saints over the years, Rivers was probably never more energized than when he was competing against Drew Brees in as many different events that he could come up with during training camp. Whether it was hitting the goal post from various distances, hitting the garbage can that was strapped to a moving cart, or simply hitting the rainbow shot into the can parked in the back corner of the end zone, Rivers couldn’t get enough it.

Maye has been joined by former Oregon passer Bo Nix and South Alabama’s Carter Bradley. If that last name sounds familiar it’s because Carter is the son of former Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley who spent four season in Los Angeles with Rivers under then-head coach Anthony Lynn. It’s nice to see that the two apparently bonded enough that Gus and Carter believed Rivers would be the latter’s best shot at making a push into the NFL.
