Paula Badosa has just announced some crushing news in Indian Wells

2021 Indian Wells champion Paula Badosa has suffered another tough setback as the former world No. 2 won’t be making her comeback in the desert after all. 

Badosa, who retired injured from her Dubai first-round match three weeks ago, came to Indian Wells with the intention of starting her Sunshine Double in the desert. On Tuesday, Badosa even participated in the Eisenhower Cup – a Tie-Break Tens event where she teamed up with her boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas for the mixed doubles event. 

During the Eisenhower Cup, Badosa didn’t show any signs that would indicate that she was in pain or discomfort it looked like she was ready for Indian Wells. But on Wednesday, Badosa withdrew from Indian Wells before her scheduled first-round meeting against Ashlyn Krueger.

After missing a good portion of the 2023 season due to a back injury, Badosa has also retired injured in two matches so far this year and is again forced to miss some tournaments due to injury. While the reason behind Badosa’s withdrawal hasn’t been listed, it wouldn’t be surprising if the 26-year-old is again dealing with a back injury. 

Badosa disappointed to have to withdraw from her ‘favorite’ event in Indian Wells

“So sorry I have to withdraw from my favorite tournament. I tried everything to be able to play but wasn’t enough,” Badosa wrote in a message posted on her Instagram Story. 

“I’m having a very difficult time with my injury but I’m fighting everyday to come back as soon as possible. I wanna thank the fans that are sticking with me, specially this past year. I’m sorry l haven’t given what you are expecting from me and I’m just giving you sad news lately. (Trust me is the last thing | want also I also want to thank the tournament for the WC, you are the best tournament in the world see you next year.”

In 2021, Badosa won Indian Wells to claim her first WTA 1000 title and also capture her second WTA title. Badosa has since become a three-time WTA champion but a WTA 1000 title in Indian Wells remains the biggest of her career.

It remains to be seen if Badosa will be ready to play again in Miami, which starts on March 19th.
