New England may be open to trading down, but so far nothing has come close to materializing.

The Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders have shown no desire to trade out of their respective spots atop the 2024 NFL Draft. It seems increasingly likely that the owners of the third overall pick will also stay put.

The New England Patriots have yet to receive a “serious offer” for the No. 3 selection, according to a report by MassLive’s Mark Daniels and Karen Guregian. With only two days to go until the event, there are questions whether one will ever come.

The Patriots themselves have expressed a potential willingness to move the pick, with both head coach Jerod Mayo and director of scouting Eliot Wolf mentioning trading back as a possibility.

“We’re open to anything. Moving up, moving down. We’re open for business in the first round, and in every round,” Wolf said during his pre-draft press conference at Gillette Stadium last week.

If New England does stay put, the expectation is that the third overall selection will be invested in a quarterback. With USC’s Caleb Williams slated to go to Chicago first overall, and with rumblings intensifying that LSU QB Jayden Daniels will be headed to Washington, Mayo, Wolf and company will get to decide between North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.

Maye has been considered one of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s class for several months now. McCarthy, meanwhile, is coming off a rapid rise up draft boards. Now, both players are projected as possible top-five selections in this year’s draft.

For the Patriots, a deep quarterback class comes in handy.

The team is in the process of rebuilding its offense, starting at the most important position on the field. Former starter Mac Jones, the 15th overall selection in 2021, was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason, with Jacoby Brissett signed as a potential bridge starter and veteran presence in a room also featuring Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke.

On Thursday, another quarterback might very well enter the mix. And unless the trade winds start blowing, it looks like that QB will do so via the No. 3 pick in the draft.
