Palermo, physical education on a golf course

on

Where there is a gymnasium there will now be a golf course. In Palermo it is no longer golf that enters the school but the opposite: it is the school that goes directly to a nine-hole course. At least until the end of the 2022/2023 school year.

Palermo, story

It happens at Villa Airoldi, in the shadow of Mount Pellegrino. The club has started a collaboration with the Marconi middle school. The students of the three complexes of the institute who are all located close to the club will carry out the hours of motor education on the nine-hole course of Villa Airoldi. A way to carry out an outdoor activity in a splendid setting and in complete safety. Running and training (until the end of this school year) in the green of a nine-hole course will allow the kids to get to know a new discipline for many of them.

The launch of the initiative was the first step of the new manager of the youth activities of the Palermo Golf Club, Calogero Ferrara. His proposal received the adhesion of the president of the association Luciano Basile.

“We are convinced – say Basile and Ferrara – of the importance of such initiatives which have always seen our club available so that young people can get closer to our sport. We can only thank the head teacher of the Marconi school for having immediately given her availability and adherence to our project. This will be only the first of a series of initiatives aimed at opening up a sport considered niche to an ever wider audience”.

Another club that physically opens its gates to those who have never played golf. Difficult to know if any of the students of the Marconi school in Palermo will start playing. Certainly, however, bringing dozens of kids into a club will be good for our sport. Golf, let us never forget, is the bearer of healthy values that can also be exchanged outside the sporting arena.

Palermo is the capital of Sicily. The 12th-century Palermo Cathedral houses royal tombs, while the imposing neoclassical Teatro Massimo is famous for its opera performances. Also in the center are the Palazzo dei Normanni, a royal palace dating back to the 9th century, and the Palatine Chapel, with Byzantine mosaics. Busy markets include the central street market Ballarò and the Vucciria, near the port.
