Discussion our favorite and the Detroit Lions’ best pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.

With the 2024 NFL Draft now in the books, it’s time to give the Detroit Lions’ draft class a ful evaluation.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes found himself a relatively balanced set of players over the past three days. Though he started with two cornerbacks, he finished with three offensive players and three defensive players (depending on what position you think Sione Vaki is). He continued to build along the trenches with two offensive linemen and one defensive lineman, but also got some necessary defensive help on the perimeter.

At times, Holmes got aggressive to get the player he wanted. Well, quite often, as four of the six picks were the result of a trade up. That said, he also got pretty good value in the two stances he stayed put, grabbing Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Christian Mahogany well after they were projected to be picked.

So today’s Question of the Day is:

What was the Lions’ best pick of the 2024 NFL Draft?

My answer: If we match up talent, value, and positional need, I think the Lions’ final pick of Christian Mahogany was my favorite.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why Mahogany was still available in the sixth round, and I’ll admit that does make me question whether there’s something pretty much every media draft expert missed. Even Holmes said he may have some ideas as to why he fell, but didn’t offer them up.

“I can probably point out a thing here or there that may have been a reason that we’ll keep internally,” Holmes said.

Is that an injury? A fatal flaw in his game? It’s hard to know, but it’s not immediately apparent.

What is apparent is his complete culture fit in Detroit. As Holmes said, Mahogany has some “dirtbag” in him when it comes to his level of play, but he was also a leader and a captain at Boston College. There is definitely some refinement needed in his game, but he’s got decent athleticism and long arms to keep defenders at bay.

I think Mahogany absolutely has a chance to eventually earn a starting role on this team, and to get that deep into the sixth round is nothing short of amazing.
