Nick Kyrgios: Hopefully I can win a Grand Slam and just retire

Nick Kyrgios admits winning a Grand Slam is one of his top goals for the 2023 season but also indicated he might retire if that happens.

Kyrgios, 27, made his first Grand Slam singles final at this year’s Wimbledon.

In the Wimbledon final, Kyrgios competed extremely well against Novak Djokovic but in the end fell short to the Serb in four sets.

Two months later, Kyrgios went to the US Open determined to lift his first Grand Slam title.

Kyrgios had a promising run at the US Open, which ended with a surprise quarterfinal defeat to Karen Khachanov.

“Hopefully I can just win a Slam and retire,” Kyrgios told tennis commentator Rob Koenig, as revealed by Randy Walker.

Kyrgios feeling pressure ahead of the Australian Open

After back-to-back strong Grand Slam runs at Wimbledon and the US Open, Kyrgios is viewed among contenders for the Australian Open title. 

Kyrgios is coming off his best-ever season on the Tour and many believe that he is now a legitimate Grand Slam title contender. 

“In real life, there’s not much pressure to being a professional tennis player. We earn great money, we travel around the world with our favourite people. We get to see different people, different cultures. In the scheme of things, that’s not pressure but I completely understand going on the match court with all this expectation that ‘Nick Kyrgios is legitimate chance to win a Grand Slam now’, there’s a lot of pressure there especially having the Australian Open and everyone in Australia expecting big things from me. It’s a lot to handle sometimes. Being in the spotlight is not easy,” Kyrgios told Eurosport this month. 

This year, Kyrgios didn’t make it too far in the Australian Open singles event as he suffered a defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the second round. 

All top players are set to participate at the 2023 Australian Open and it remains to be seen if Kyrgios can win his first Grand Slam singles title in January.
