Nic Nemeth defeats Alberto Del Rio to win AAA Mega Championship

Nic Nemeth has Alberto Del Rio’s number inside the ring. Nemeth defeated Alberto to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in 2013, and he did it again to win the AAA Mega Championship at Triplemania XXXII.

Nemeth and Alberto competed for the vacant Megacampeonato on Saturday night (Apr. 27, 2024) in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. It was a back and forth affair throughout. The first close call to a finish came when Alberto applied an armbar, but Nemeth was able to grasp his hands together to prevent full extension until reaching the ropes with his foot for a break. Alberto took the action up a notch by catching Nemeth for a powerbomb onto a table. The wood didn’t break, so Alberto added a flying leg drop. Nemeth kicked out on the cover.

As the match progressed, Nemeth surprised Alberto with an armbar. El Patron powered up to escape via powerbomb. Alberto charged forth and collided into a table in the corner. Nemeth pounced for the Danger Zone (Zig Zag). Kick out by Alberto.

Nemeth tuned up the band for a superkick. Alberto blocked to counter for a backbreaker. The Pride of Mexico clotheslined the foreigner over the ropes. That’s when Nemeth reached into his bag of tricks. Alberto ran for a suicide dive, but Nemeth threw a beverage in his face. Nemeth struck with a low blow kick and hit another Danger Zone for victory.

This result is quite the surprise. Alberto was positioned as the favorite to prevail. Nemeth wasn’t even on television to build toward this match, and now he holds AAA’s top prize. This win makes Nemeth a double champion with the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship from NJPW.
