One notable NFL insider has the Dallas Cowboys taking Texas WR Xavier Worthy in their mock draft.

The amount of time that separates us from the 2024 NFL Draft is officially down to single digits in terms of days. Deep breaths, everyone. We can do this.

Soon enough all of the hype and hysteria will be over and we will have a new Dallas Cowboys draft class to examine in intricate detail. It is likely that you have certain players who you hope are a part of it, and odds are that you have even selected them for the team in a mock draft exercise or two.

While we all love mock drafts it is usually by mid-April that we have reached our limit with them. You can only see the same handful of names rotated through so many times before you are ready to just get the show on the road, but mocks are a valuable part of the overall pre-draft process in terms of the information that we can glean from them.

NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah often says that he builds his big board with his eyes (meaning how he views/grades the players) and does his mocks with his ears (meaning based off of what he is hearing around the league). Mocks can tell us what NFL teams are saying by way of the person putting it together and a league insider had a very interesting choice for the Cowboys on Tuesday.

Peter Schrager mocked Texas WR Xavier Worthy to the Dallas Cowboys

One of the most plugged-in NFL insiders in the game is Peter Schrager. You have likely seen him on either GMFB or on the league’s coverage from FOX. What any one insider says is hardly gospel, but it is still worthy of examining. On Tuesday, Schrager released his first mock of the season after what he deemed as “weeks on the phones with GMs and HC’s.”

On the subject of worthy, that is who he sent to Dallas at pick number 24. We are of course talking about wide receiver Xavier Worthy out of Texas.

Pick 24

Dallas Cowboys: Xavier Worthy, Texas · WR · Junior

Officially the fastest man in combine history, Worthy would be a wonderful addition as a deep threat for Dak Prescott. With contract issues looming over Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, the selection of Worthy would show both a commitment to adding pieces on offense without sacrificing major cap space in free agency.

You have likely seen somebody mock Worthy to Dallas on one occasion or another, but this feels a little bit more serious than that. This isn’t to say that it is a serious thing, but we have to consider the possibility if someone like Schrager is hearing this is a possibility from all of the people that he has spoken to.

Consider that the next pick in the mock was Amarius Mims to the Green Bay Packers. Graham Barton went right after that to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jackson Powers-Johnson did not go at all (it was a first-round mock only). Dallas passing up legitimate help along the offensive line in the name of a wide receiver would be quite the choice.

To be clear, wide receiver is definitely a need for the team with the future opposite of CeeDee Lamb a bit in doubt (assuming Lamb gets the extension, he is currently absent from voluntary workouts while seeking). Dallas should absolutely take a wideout at some point in the draft.

But in the first round? With starting-quality linemen available? That seems a bit rich.
