This is Major Tom to Ground Control, I’ve got my helmet on.

If there’s one challenge the NFL has in 2024 and beyond, it’s player safety.

As players continue to become bigger and faster, helmet-to-helmet hits will continue to be brutal and could dissuade future generations from ever stepping onto the field.

The NFL decided that it will now allow players to wear Guardian Caps, the cushioned sleeve stretched over the helmets we see during training camp, during the regular season in an attempt to minimize traumatic brain injuries.

The Guardian Caps have been mandatory for linemen in training camps for a couple of years, but now they will be made mandatory for “most players” in training camp and any full-contact practice. The Guardian Caps will be voluntary, but if things go the way they have, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them made mandatory for everyone in the next few years.

It is ironic that this new ruling is coming right after the NFL decided to allow the Cincinnati Bengals and the rest of the franchises to have alternate helmets.

Safety should always come first, though.
