NCAA men’s volleyball: AVCA top 25, POW; Penn State tops CSUN

Catching up on NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball, including the AVCA top 25 and results from the past two days.

AVCA TOP 20, POW: The top six — Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, Hawai’i, UCLA, UC Irvine and BYU — stayed the same. 

GCU got 21 first-place votes and Long Beach the other two.

Stanford moved up one spot to No. 7, replacing Ohio State, which dropped a spot to eighth. Penn State is still No. 9 and Pepperdine remained 10th.

UC Santa Barbara, 7-10, moved back in at No. 19, and McKendree is in for the first time this season at No. 20. Lincoln Memorial and Daemen dropped out.

The AVCA national player of the week is Tyler Poulsen of McKendree. The senior setter had 81 assists in MIVA sweeps of Lindenwood and Quincy and his team hit .387. He’s the first McKendree player to be honored in three years.

NCAA MEN WEDNESDAY: There are four matches Wednesday, highlighted by No. 9 Penn State of the EIVA at No. 12 USC of the MPSF. Saint Francis (PA) of the NEC is at Fort Valley State of the SIAC, the MIVA’s McKendree is at independent Missouri A&T, and the NEC’s D’Youville is at the ECC’s Roberts Wesleyan.

MEN’S RECAPS: Penn State (13-4) of the EIVA won 25-21, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23 at No. 16 CSUN (9-8) of the Big West. Toby Ezeonu had 10 kills, hit .692, and had an ace and three blocks. John Kerr had 13 kills. CSUN’s Kyle Hobus had 19 kills, four aces and six blocks, two solo … 

In the MIVA, Lindenwood (7-9, 3-5) swept visiting Quincy (5-9, 1-8) as Clay Weiter led a balanced attack with 10 kills, an ace and three digs … 

Saint Francis (PA) (10-6) swept the SIAC’s Edward Waters (4-7) as all 11 players got at least one kill… Makai Scott had 25 kills as Maryville (16-3) won the battle of Missouri independents with a five-set win over Missouri S&T (8-9), which got 24 kills from Nate Meyer … St. Andrews won in four at the SIAC’s Benedict Daemen (12-3) of the NEC swept visiting independent Thomas More (9-9) behind 14 kills from Cameron Milligan, who hit .650 … 

In the only match Monday, D’Youville (7-6) of the NEC swept  Thomas More.
