More People Are Working on Battlefield Than Ever Before

on

Electronic Arts is desperate to avoid making any mistakes with the next Battlefield game. Presently, nobody knows what the next Battlefield title will look like, we only know that EA has lofty ambitions for it and that it’ll be a ‘reimagining’ of the franchise thus far. Every Battlefield fan has their ideal vision for ‘Battlefield 6’, but it could be some time before we learn what it looks like. Recently, it was revealed that more people than ever before are working on the next Battlefield title.

In the last year or two, more studios have been brought in to focus on various aspects of the next Battlefield game. We know that there will be a solid single-player offering, as entire studios are dedicated to making sure an immersive campaign is deployed from day one. That was one of the biggest failures with 2021’s Battlefield 2042, which was a multiplayer-exclusive game. There’s plenty more that’s being kept under wraps, though.

When Will Battlefield 6 Be Revealed?

It seems likely that Battlefield 6 will be revealed either late this year or early next year. It was recently confirmed that development on Battlefield 2042 is at an end, with the current season being the last major update that the game will receive. That’s because Electronic Arts is consolidating its studios and ordering them to focus on the creation of Battlefield 6 – or whatever it’ll be called.

That means that all resources are being brought to bear on the next Battlefield game. In a recent earnings call, the CEO of Electronic Arts, Andrew Wilson, confirmed:

‘This is the largest Battlefield team in franchise history. A few weeks ago, I was visiting with the teams, and I couldn’t be more excited about what they showed and what we were able to play.’

So, there’s a playable build floating around and it’s shaping up very nicely, according to the head of the company. However, Wilson’s next comment did leave fans feeling a little fearful:

I’ve just spent a whole bunch of time with the collective Battlefield team playing what they’re building and it is going to be another tremendous live service game.’

These days, almost every multiplayer title that hits the market is a live service game, but it’s not always a good thing. In many ways, it can mean that players are in for an experience bursting at the seams with microtransactions, potential delays between updates, and periodic changes that break the game. Battlefield 2042 was a live service game and it was one of the worst-rated Battlefield games in history.

Many are calling for Battlefield to revert to its old operating model. In the ‘peak days’ of Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, all Electronic Arts did was produce map packs once every few months that were optional purchases. There was a one-time ‘Premium’ pass that players could buy that’d ensure them access to all these packs, and that was it. It was a winning formula, but it wasn’t the most lucrative option for Electronic Arts.

And as we know, money is king in this business. It’ll be interesting to see what Electronic Arts – a company that recently made massive cuts to save money – will do with the next Battlefield game.
