Monday Cheese Curds: Competition abounds on the Packers offensive line

The Packers have plenty of options when it comes to protecting Jordan Love

It’s been attributed to a lot of different people (Stalin, Napoleon, some random U.S. defense contractor in the 1970s), but I think about the quote “quantity has a quality all its own” a lot. I think it’s a great guideline for roster building, and it’s one the Packers seem to have embraced on the offensive line.

There’s plenty of quality on the offensive line: Zach Tom and Elgton Jenkins are two very bright spots. But I think the bigger point on the offensive line is this: the Packers have a lot of options.

Jordan Morgan and Rasheed Walker will have their battle at left tackle, but regardless of who wins, the Packers will have depth at the position. The same is true at center, where the Packers will either have incumbent starter Josh Myers, Zach Tom via a position switch, or 2024 rookie Jacob Monk, who’s also an option at right guard. 2022 third-round pick Sean Rhyan, who cameoed at right guard in 2023, should also get his fair shake at the position this year.

And there’s a host of other options up front, too: long-term prospects Caleb Jones and Luke Tenuta are joined by Kadeem Telfort (a 2023 UDFA) and 2024 UDFA signings Trente Jones and Donovan Jennings at tackle. Royce Newman, salary cap issues notwithstanding, might also get another shot inside. (I didn’t say all the options were good). And we haven’t even mentioned 2024 free agent signing Andre Dillard, who is, if nothing else, another large and athletic prospect.

The point is, even if the offensive line picture is muddled, there is a lot to like, and we should have a lot of confidence in whatever lineup the Packers end up with. Options lead to competition which leads to a strong unit, and the Packers have a lot of options up front.
