Miami Flashback: Roger Federer storms over Daniil Medvedev

Playing against each other for the third time, world no. 5 and three-time Miami champion Roger Federer defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-2 in swift 61 minutes in 2019 for his 84th Masters 1000 quarter-final! The match was postponed due to rain and played the next day, with Federer wasting no time on the court against the upcoming youngster. The Swiss rattled off nine out of the final 11 games from 4-3 down in the opener to advance into the last eight. It was Roger’s third and best match at Hard Rock Stadium. He dropped 11 points in nine service games, fending off three break points in the opening set’s tenth game and bringing the remaining service games home quickly to mount the pressure on the young Russian. Daniil fought well in the first eight games before suddenly losing ground, never finding the rhythm again and finishing his journey in the fourth round. Federer fired 22 winners and eight unforced errors, leaving Medvedev on a 14-15 ratio and dominating in the shortest and mid-range rallies to forge the victory in just over an hour.

Daniil started the action with three service winners in the encounter’s first game. Roger repeated that in game two and held despite the rival’s two backhand winners. Federer grabbed the fourth game at love for 2-2 after 11 minutes of excellent tennis, with 15 winners and two unforced errors! Medvedev added three winners in the fifth game, and Federer landed four in the next one for 3-3 and 22 direct points! The Russian held at love in the seventh game, and the Swiss responded with a volley winner at the net for 4-4. The returners took only seven points so far, and it all changed in game nine. Federer fired two winners and created two break chances, with Medvedev netting a backhand to lose serve and fall 5-4 behind. Roger served for the opener in game ten and faced three break points following Daniil’s bold strokes.

Federer stayed composed and grabbed five points in a row for 6-4 in 32 minutes. Roger fired 18 winners and four unforced errors in the opener, bringing it home with a better performance in the latter stages. With no service winners, Medvedev sprayed four mistakes at the start of the second set to lose serve and fall further behind. Federer painted four winners in the second game to clinch it in style and rattle off five straight games. Roger opened a 3-1 gap with four direct points in game four and delivered another comfortable hold for 4-2. Daniil moved 40-15 in front in game seven before spraying three mistakes to get broken and fall 5-2 behind after a double fault. Roger fell 30-0 behind in the eighth game while serving for the victory before claiming four straight points to emerge at the top and move into the quarter-final.
