The presence of screeching monkeys and cawing peacocks attracted the attention of participants at the 123rd US Open, held right in the Los Angeles Country Club. These animals are part of the former residence of Hugh Hefner, famous editor-in-chief of Playboy magazine, now owned by billionaire Daren Metropoulos.
Even famous golfers like Patrick Cantlay, known as the “Iceman” for his calmness on the course, can’t ignore the sound of monkeys when they play the 14th hole. Cantlay, a Long Beach native, has played that course many times, and confirmed the presence of over 50 squirrel monkeys that can become particularly noisy in the presence of humans.
Hefner’s residence has been described as an oasis for a variety of animals, including monkeys, peacocks, cockatoos and many others. Hefner transformed his property into a favorable environment for animals, making it a sort of paradise for them.
Despite the residence’s prestigious location near an iconic golf facility designed by George Thomas, Hefner was never accepted as a member of the Los Angeles Country Club, notorious for its rigidity in admitting members, especially among Hollywood stars.
The presence of the monkeys made Hefner’s participation on the golf course significant, a feature that continues to be notable today.
The rules of golf are undoubtedly complex, since the game takes place outdoors, in close contact with nature and, sometimes, with the presence of wild animals. Respect for the rules is fundamental in golf, since the game is mainly based on the self-control and free conscience of the players.
