Long Beach rallies to beat UCSB, Stanford bounces back against BYU

Second-ranked Long Beach State had to rally from a 2-1 deficit to win its Big West match at No. 19 UC Santa Barbara, No. 7 Stanford turned the MPSF tide on No. 6 BYU and Kentucky pulled off an SIAC reverse sweep against Benedict.

There are just four NCAA Division I-II matches on the Sunday schedule but they involve six ranked teams and one that was.

At Hawai’i, No. 14 Lewis, coming off that upset of No. 5 UC Irvine on Friday, plays No. 1 Grand Canyon, which is coming off back-to-back losses on this road trip. Then the home team, the No. 3 Rainbow Warriors, play UCI as they go for their 16th victory in a row.

Fourth-ranked UCLA is home for No. 8 Ohio State and independent Lincoln Memorial, which was ranked earlier this season, again plays the team with the best overall record in Conference Carolinas, 13-3 Mount Olive. Mount Olive beat LM on Saturday.

Long Beach State (16-1, 2-0 Big West) came away with a 25-20, 23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13 victory at UC Santa Barbara (7-12, 0-3) as Skyler Varga had 19 kills and Sotiris Siapanis 18. Varga had an assist, two blocks and nine digs, and Siapanis hit .406 and had an assist, two aces, a block and 10 digs. Clarke Godbold had 10 kills, a dig and three blocks, one solo. Simon Torwie had seven blocks and four kills and Aidan Knipe had 52 assists, four blocks and 11 digs. His team his .285 and had three aces and 22 errors. Mason Briggs had 17 digs and four assists. 

UCSB, which hit .259 and had two aces — both from Jack Walmer — and 17 errors, got 23 kills from Geste Bianchi. He had no aces and five errors, but four blocks and 10 digs. Ben Coordt had 15 kills, two assists, a block and 11 digs and Owen Birg had 14 kills, an assist and five digs. Walmer had a kill, 54 assists, two blocks and nine digs. Joe Wallace had 15 digs and two assists … 

Stanford (9-9, 2-4 MPSF), which lost to visiting BYU (11-7, 2-4) the day before in five, swept the Cougars 25-19, 25-20, 25-21. The Cardinal snapped a three-game skid as Kevin Lamp led a balanced attack with nine kills. Five of his teammates had five or more kills. Lamp had one error in 19 attacks to hit .421 and had had an assist, two aces, three blocks and four digs. Nathaniel Gates had six kills with no errors in 10 attacks. The Cardinal hit .299 and had 12 aces and 11 errors. BYU hit .224 and had two aces and eight errors. Miks Ramanis had 16 of BYU’s 37 kills, hitting .444 with two aces, a block and six digs … 

The two MIVA teams in action split. No. 20 McKendree (12-6) beat independent Maryville (17-4) in four as Rolen Lively had 13 kills, Sam Hoskin 12 and Nathan Flayter 10. Lively had no errors in 19 attacks and four of his team’s five aces. Quincy (5-11) lost at independent Missouri S&T (9-10). Nate Meyer led the winners with 20 kills, hitting .438, while Raje Alleyne had 19 kills for Quincy … 

No. 17 George Mason (9-7) of the EIVA beat visiting Fairleigh Dickson (6-9) of the NEC in four. Jackson Herbert led the Patriots with 19 kills, hitting .444, to go with an ace, a dig and three solo blocks … Also in the NEC, D’Youville (8-6) beat visiting independent Tusculum (4-13) in four. Ian De Wilde led with 14 kills, hitting .429, to go with two assists, an ace, five digs and five blocks, one solo …  

Kentucky State (5-11. 4-2) rallied for a 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-9 SIAC victory over visting Benedict (1-12, 1-4). Jordan Howard led with 16 kills, an assist, an ace and 13 digs. Malachi Allen had 13 kills. Benedict’s Camron Petillo had 18 kills … Edward Waters (6-7, 3-0) swept at Central State (4-19, 3-3). Tavion Ford had 14 kills with one error in 31 attacks for EWU to go with three aces, eight digs and five blocks … 

LIU (7-11) of the NEC swept visting Barton (9-7) of Conference Carolinas for the second straight day, as nine Sharks had kills, nine by Livan Moreno …

 Mount Olive (13-3) of Conference Carolinas won in four at independent Lincoln Memorial (11-5). Mount Olive got 15 kills from Kory Grant, 15 from Hayden Frear and 13 from Justin Gregory. LM’s Johan Negron had 16 kills … The woes continued for Lees-McRae of Conference Carolinas. The Bobcats dropped to 1-19 with non-conference sweep losses to Life and St. Andrews

There were two ECC matches. Roberts Wesleyan (5-10, 1-1) swept visiting Dominican (8-8, 2-1) and St. Thomas Aquinas (5-11, 2-1) swept at American International (1-11, 0-1) behind Dutch freshman Kyran Versteegen, who had 20 of his team’s 39 kills. He hit .607 and had an ace, five digs and two blocks.
