Lalit Modi on IND vs PAK T20 WC 2024

The upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, slated to kick off next month in the USA and West Indies, is generating significant buzz. Among the highly anticipated matchups is the clash between India and Pakistan, scheduled to take place at the Nassau Country International Cricket Stadium in New York.

With a capacity crowd expected, fans may encounter difficulties securing tickets for this marquee fixture. Recently, the ICC revealed the ticket prices for the India-Pakistan encounter. The cost of these tickets was relatively high. Taking note of this, former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi lashed out at the cricketing board for setting the ticket price too high.

Lalit Modi criticizes ICC for overpriced ticket costs

Lalit took to X to condemn the exorbitant ticket prices for the India-Pakistan match. He expressed disbelief upon learning that the ICC was selling tickets for a staggering $20,000 (INR 16 lakhs) for a Diamond Club seat. Lalit stressed that the primary objective of hosting the global event in the USA was to expand cricket’s footprint and bolster fan involvement rather than purely pursuing profits. Concluding his remarks, the 60-year-old labelled the ICC as the International Council of Crooks.

“Shocked to learn that @ICC is selling tickets for Diamond Club at $20000 per seat for the #indvspak WC game. The WC in the US is for game expansion & fan engagement, not a means to make profits on gate collections. $2750 for a ticket It’s just #notcricket #intlcouncilofcrooks,” Lalit wrote on X.

India and Pakistan Head-to-Head

The Asian Giants have encountered each other on seven occasions in the prestigious tournament, including the 2007 final. Following two clashes in the inaugural edition, the two teams met in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021, and 2022. However, they did not face each other in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Pakistan broke India’s winning streak in World Cups with a resounding 10-wicket victory over the team led by Virat Kohli in 2021. However, India emerged victorious in their last encounter at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium in 2022.  Currently, the winning streak of the Men in Blue stands at 6-1.
