Dominic Thiem has confirmed what has been rumored over the last couple of days as the 2020 US Open champion has decided to walk away from pro tennis after this season.

Earlier this week, Austrian media reported that Thiem started informing his sponsors about his decision to retire this year and that he was planning on concluding his career in front of his home fans in Vienna.

On Friday afternoon European time, the 30-year-old Austrian posted a video announcement on his Instagram, where he confirmed that he will be retiring later this year.

At the start of his message, Thiem said he had “very important, very sad but also a very beautiful message.”

“The season 2024 is gonna be my last one. I am gonna finish my career with the end of this season,” Thiem said in a video statement posted on his Instagram.

Thiem highlights wrists issues as one of the main reasons for his decision

Since sustaining a serious injury in 2021 June, Thiem hasn’t managed to come anywhere near his old level despite fighting hard and doing everything he could to rediscover the tennis that was once making him one of the top players in the world.

“My wrist is not at the way it should be and how I want it. I was thinking about this decision for a very long time,” Thiem admitted.

Thiem, who will be turning 31 in September, also said that he was “super excited” about the next chapter of his life.

“I am very happy with it (decision) and I am also super excited for everything what is coming next,” Thiem said in the video.

For a couple of years, Thiem was one of the best players in the world and regularly contending for the biggest titles.

But the last couple of seasons have been rough for Thiem and everything that has happened over the last few years led to this decision.
