Jon Rahm, the road to the Bethpage is open

on

Just over a month ago, when discussing the future of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton in the Ryder Cup, we parted with the hope that the transition from Keith Pelley to Guy Kinnings would bring about a new approach in DP World Tour policies.

Well, that hope has partially come to fruition.

Jon Rahm, results

In an interview with The Guardian, Kinnings shed some light on the current regulatory situation regarding eligibility for Team Europe.

The new CEO of the former European Tour stated that there is nothing preventing a LIV Golf player from qualifying or being subject to a Captain’s Pick, as long as they are members of the DP World Tour and abide by the existing rules.

The three main pillars (I reiterate for convenience) are:

Participating in at least four Tour events. Paying outstanding fines (one for each unauthorized event played). Serving suspensions from Tour calendar events (one week for each unauthorized event played). Now, the concrete issue arose from the combination of suspensions, the need to participate in at least four DP World Tour events, and the LIV Golf calendar.

Kinnings has proposed a solution that resolves the equation: Rahm and Hatton can serve their suspensions in weeks when the LIV Golf calendar does not feature events, even if they do not intend to play in DPWT calendar tournaments scheduled for those weeks.

“This is not a loophole,” commented the new CEO of the DPWT, “because these are the rules we have always had.”

“And these are the rules we will continue to enforce, because they are well-established.”

Guy Kinnings’ effort is commendable and addresses requests from various quarters (especially Rory McIlroy) aimed at ensuring the integrity of Team Europe.
