Jon Moxley Named Sports Illustrated’s Top Male Wrestler Of 2019

on

Sports Illustrated has released their list of the top 10 male wrestlers of 2019, with AEW’s Jon Moxley coming in at number one. Also included were fellow AEW stars Cody Rhodes, Chris Jericho, and Kenny Omega, WWE’s Seth Rollins and Kofi Kingston, NJPW’s Kazuchika Okada, Will Ospreay and Kota Ibushi, GCW’s Nick Gage and NXT champion Adam Cole.

Moxley began the year still employed by WWE when it was revealed that he would not be renewing his contract. He reunited with the Shield for a final run, including a one-off WWE network special entitled The Shield’s Final Chapter. Following his departure, Moxley appeared at AEW’s inaugural Double or Nothing pay per view attacking Chris Jericho and beginning a feud with Kenny Omega. Later that evening, Moxley would release a video hyping his appearance in NJPW, where he would become IWGP United States champion in his first matchup, and enter the prestigious G1 Climax tournament, which included a five-star classic with Tomohiro Ishii. Travel issues prevented him from defending his U.S. title, and he would be stripped. However, he will be competing against current champion Lance Archer at the January 4th WrestleKingdom.

Moxley’s feud with Kenny Omega culminated at November’s Full Gear pay per view in an unsanctioned deathmatch that had the collective wrestling universe buzzing. Moxley won the contest with his signature Paradigm Shift finisher. (Aka Dirty Deeds or Death Rider DDT).
