Jim Courier reveals the real goal Rafael Nadal is pursuing

on

Rafael Nadal is training hard to return to playing on clay courts. The Spanish tennis player should return to the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, the first clay-swing ATP Masters 1000.

Precisely to arrive physically prepared for this tournament, Rafa had to postpone his return to the court once again, after the physical problem suffered in Brisbane, Australia, missing the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Jim Courier was not surprised by Nadal’s choice and, through an interview with Tennis Channel, the former US legend analyzed the situation concerning the Spanish tennis player.

“It’s not necessarily a surprise to me, I was in Las Vegas and I saw that he wasn’t serving as usual, that he had a problem and that he wasn’t moving as fast as when he’s at 100%. Despite everything, I have the impression that Rafa did everything to be ready.

He arrived early and we all remember the famous photo on the plane with Djokovic. But everyone knows that his real goal is the Roland Garros. So he felt there was a real risk of compromising this objective,” explained Courier.

Nadal’s latest troubles

The last year of the Spanish champion was punctuated by physical problems, which practically never gave him respite. The new season, which was supposed to mark his definitive return to the ATP Tour lasted just two games before stopping again.

“It is with great sadness that I have to announce my withdrawal from this fantastic tournament. Everyone knows how much I love playing in the desert and how much I love being here at Indian Wells and that’s also why I arrived so early to train.

I’ve worked hard and done some tests but I’m not ready to take part in such an important event. It’s not an easy decision, in fact it’s very difficult for me but I can’t lie to myself and above all to all my fans. I will miss you all and I am sure that the tournament will be a great success,” wrote the 22-time slam champion on his social media.
