Daniil Medvedev has chosen to extend his break, after the efforts accumulated at the Australian Open 2024, also giving up the ATP tournament in Doha. The Russian’s choice will obviously have direct consequences in the ATP ranking, which could reward Jannik Sinner.
The Italian has two chances at the ABN AMRO, ATP 500 in Rotterdam, to become the first tennis player from his country to reach the 3rd spot of the ATP ranking in the Open Era. Only Nicola Pietrangeli – when the new computerized ranking had not yet been introduced – achieved the feat.
Jannik Sinner will become the new ATP No.3 if he wins the Rotterdam tournament or if he reaches the final at the ABN AMRO Open.
The road is still long, because Sinner, after beating the French Gael Monfils in three sets, will face the Canadian Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals in a few hours. The former Wimbledon 2016 finalist eliminated an in-form tennis player like Alexander Bublik in two sets.

Medvedev gives up on Doha
The rumors that have been circulating have turned out to be correct: Daniil Medvedev will not even play the ATP 250 tournament in Doha. The Russian tennis player preferred to take a short break at the end of the difficult journey experienced at the Australian Open, preferring not to defend the title in Rotterdam and now giving up on Doah.
The Russian has chosen to extend this period until the ATP Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, and this will cost him another 250 points in the rankings. Medvedev had in fact overcome Andy Murray with a double 6-4 in the final of the last edition of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.
Speaking at the press conference after the victory over Monfils, Jannik analyzed: “In the second set I played badly on serve and the situation changed quickly. It’s never easy against Monfils, he always changes something. Gael is an incredible showman, all people love him and the sport needs him. I hope he plays as long as possible and can face him again.”
Sinner also analyzed the match that awaits him in the quarter-finals with Canadian Milos Raonic: “It will be a tough match, but I can’t wait to face this new challenge. I trained with him a few times when I was younger. I hope it can be a good race, even if there won’t be much pace.”
