Mexico, officially called the United Mexican States, is a representative democracy composed of thirty-two federal entities, including 31 states and Mexico City. According to the Mexican Constitution, the capital of the state and the seat of the federation’s powers is Mexico City.

Located in the southern part of North America and northern Latin America, Mexico is bordered to the north by the United States of America, to the east by the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, to the southeast by Belize and Guatemala, and to the west with the Pacific Ocean. With an area of 1,972,550 kmĀ², Mexico is the 14th largest country in the world and with a population of over 129,976,000 inhabitants, it is the 10th most populous country in the world. It is also the most populous Spanish-speaking country and the second Catholic country after Brazil. In Mexico, Spanish is the official language, but many indigenous languages are also recognized.

Human settlement in this territory dates back to approximately eleven thousand years ago, and since then the country has seen the passage of various peoples, both farmers from Mesoamerica and nomads. After the Spanish conquest, Mexico began its struggle for political independence in 1810. Subsequently, for nearly a century, the country was embroiled in a series of civil wars and foreign invasions that profoundly affected all aspects of Mexican life . During much of the 20th century, especially in the first half, Mexico experienced a period of strong economic growth under a political system dominated by a single party.
