on

The Italian Pro Tour 2024, organized by the Italian Golf Federation with the support of Official Advisor Infront Italy, kicks off with the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon. The event, a staple on both national and international calendars and part of the Alps Tour, will be held at La Pinetina Golf Club in Appiano Gentile, Como, from Wednesday, May 8, to Friday, May 10. The event will be preceded by the Pro-Am of the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni on Tuesday, May 7. This competition honors Giorgio Bordoni, a federal coach who passed away prematurely in 2013 and was instrumental in the significant achievements of the Italian national teams from 1997 to 2005, overseeing both male and female squads.

This year marks the tenth edition of the event, where Italian players have consistently been key contenders. Andrea Perrino (2015), Stefano Pitoni (2016), Marco Crespi (2017), Guido Migliozzi (2018), and Gregorio De Leo (2022) have each claimed victories, demonstrating strong performances by Italians, who have won the event five times. Spanish players have also made their mark with three wins: Borja Virto in 2014, Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez in 2019, and Angel Hidalgo Portillo in 2021. The event was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic. Dutch player Kiet Van der Weele, who swiftly moved to the Challenge Tour in June last year after three victories in less than two months, is the other notable winner.

With a field of 144 competitors from 16 countries, including nine of the top ten and seventeen of the top twenty from the order of merit, the Italians are poised to be favorites once again. Edoardo Raffaele Lipparelli, who leads the money list and recently won the New Giza Open, and Gianmaria Rean Trinchero, winner of last week’s Tunisian Golf Open, are among those expected to excel. The field also includes other seasonal winners like Frenchman Aymeric Laussot and amateur Spaniard José Antonio Sintes Navarro, making the competition particularly fierce.

The Pro-Am of the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni will officially start the golfing activities on Tuesday, featuring 17 teams composed of one professional and three amateurs. The 18-hole match will be played in a “Tour Scramble – net aggregate team score in relation to par” format and will count only birdies, eagles, and albatrosses for scoring. The Pro-Am promises a blend of competition and camaraderie, with participants like Laussot, Kedochim, and Galliano showcasing the inclusive nature of the event, which also features a team led by paralympic athletes Alessandra Donati, Mario Gazzetta, and Roberto Granatiero under the guidance of Lorenzo Magini.

The Memorial Giorgio Bordoni is set over 54 holes with a cut after the first 36 that will see the top 40 and ties proceed. The prize pool stands at 40,000 euros, with the winner taking home 5,800 euros. The picturesque La Pinetina Golf Club offers a challenging course with rolling terrain and stunning views of Monte Rosa and the Lombard Prealps, providing a perfect backdrop for the high-level golf expected.

The event is supported by Aon as the presenting sponsor, and other partners include Fideuram Intesa SanPaolo Private Banking, Kappa, Poste Assicura, Corriere dello Sport, Tuttosport, and Bocconi University. With such strong backing and a competitive field, the 2024 season of the Italian Pro Tour is set to be memorable.
