Rohit Sharma opens up on Impact Player rule

Rohit Sharma, fresh from scoring an unbeaten century against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 29th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL), recently appeared on the Club Prairie Podcast, co-hosted by Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan.

During the podcast, Rohit delved into various topics concerning the IPL and the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Notably, he shared his insights on the Impact Player rule in the IPL, offering his critical perspectives on the matter.

Rohit Sharma criticizes the Impact Player rule in IPL

While speaking on the Impact Player rule, the former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain said that he is not a fan of it and remarked that rules like these can impact the growth of all-rounders in the game.

“I’m not a big fan of impact player. You are taking out so much from the game just to make it little entertainment for the people around. But if you look, genuinely just cricketing aspect of it. I can give you so many examples of guys like Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl, which for us [India team] is not a good thing,” Rohit said on the Club Prairie podcast.

“I generally feel that it is going to hold back [growth of all-rounders] because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12 players,” the Indian skipper added.

Rohit has previously drawn attention to this rule’s limitations. In a post-match press conference last year, when he was MI’s captain, he emphasized that regardless of any new opportunities presented by the Impact Player Rule, the role of all-rounders in the team would remain unchanged.

“An all-rounder will always be an all-rounder. No matter what stage of the game, it will give you an option of bowling him any time, making him bat anytime. So allrounder will remain allrounder. Yes, with that 12th player, you can always fill that gap of having that balance of having a fifth or probably sixth bowler or an extra batter,” the 36-year-old remarked last year.

250th IPL match

In the clash between MI and Punjab Kings (PBKS), the accomplished batter has etched another prestigious record beside his name. This match marked Rohit’s 250th appearance in the IPL, making him the second player to reach this milestone. It’s worth noting that MS Dhoni was the first cricketer to achieve this remarkable milestone.
