The upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) finds itself caught in a familiar tussle with the general elections. With the Election Commission of India (ECI) announcing crucial dates in coming days, speculation swirls around the potential relocation of the IPL’s later stages outside India.

Franchises take precautionary measures

Adding fuel to the fire, some IPL franchises have reportedly collected passports from both domestic and foreign players. This can be interpreted in two ways. Primarily, it’s a precautionary measure. By having passports readily available, franchises ensure player mobility in case the IPL schedule needs adjustments due to election dates. This could involve shifting some matches abroad or potentially altering the entire tournament structure.

BCCI assurances vs past precedents

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) attempts to quell these concerns by assuring fans that the entire IPL will be held within the country. However, the BCCI’s assurances might not fully appease fans with memories of the IPL being held outside India in previous election years. This history creates a sense of uncertainty surrounding the final decision.

Possible scenarios

  • Full IPL in India: This is the BCCI’s preferred scenario, with the entire tournament played within the country as planned.
  • Partially Shifted IPL: If election dates significantly clash with the IPL schedule, some matches, especially those in the later stages, might be relocated to UAE.
  • Entire IPL Shifted: This scenario, though unlikely based on the BCCI’s stance, would involve holding the entire IPL outside India.

Impact on fans and players

A shifted IPL could disrupt fan experiences, with some fans potentially missing out on witnessing their favourite teams play live. Logistically, players might face additional travel and adjustments to their routines.
