New England starts its draft by picking a quarterback.

The New England Patriots entered the 2024 NFL Draft with a major need at quarterback, and it did not take long for them to address it. With the third overall position, they selected North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.

One of the top prospects available, Maye offers considerable franchise-caliber traits. Whether he starts Year 1 remains to be seen, but the Patriots are banking on his upside to be a long-term solution at the most important position in the game.

1-3 QB Drake Maye (North Carolina)

Bernd Buchmasser: Whether or not Maye was the top player on the board at No. 3, this was primarily a needs pick for the Patriots. Nonetheless, there is no denying the North Carolina passer is one of the most promising prospects in this class and more than capable of living up to his draft status. The current regime led by Eliot Wolf and Jerod Mayo will be judged by this selection, but they brought in a player who has all the tools you would want from your franchise quarterback. His immense ceiling makes the investment worth it. | A

Brian Hines: The Patriots land my top ranked quarterback in this entire draft at No. 3 and after two QBs already come off the board. Maye has all the tools teams look for in a quarterback prospect with his size, arm talent and athleticism, as well as the intangibles off-the-field New England has prioritized. As Jerod Mayo explained, there is “no ceiling” to a player like Maye. | A+

With Drake Maye now aboard, the Patriots have taken a major step in their rebuilding process. They still have needs at left tackle and outside wide receiver, but the biggest issue has been addressed.
