Iga Swiatek ties Simona Halep in consecutive weeks at No 1 on WTA Tour

on

Iga Swiatek has entered her 48th consecutive week at the world No 1 spot and with that she has matched Simona Halep in consecutive weeks at the top spot.

On April 4th, 2022, Swiatek became the world No 1 for the first time in her career.

Since then, there haven’t been any changes at the top spot on the WTA Tour.

Swiatek, who has around 4500 points more than second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, will next week surpass Halep’s record for the most consecutive weeks at the top spot.

When that happens, Swiatek will be the 18th player on the all-time list for the most consecutive weeks spent at the top spot.

The record hold Serena Williams and Steffi Graf, who both managed to be ranked at the world No 1 spot for 186 weeks in a row.

Swiatek set to defend 1000 points in Indian Wells

This past weekend, Swiatek suffered a surprise defeat in the Dubai final against Barbora Krejcikova.

This week, Swiatek shared a message to her fans, revealing that she was dealing with a viral infection during the final.

However, Swiatek noted that she will be ready to defend her Indian Wells title in early March.

“Yesterday I was still in Dubai, today I’m in Warsaw, soon in Indian Wells. These last few weeks were intense, and challenging but we did a lot of good work and progress. I enjoyed tournaments in Doha and Dubai and even though I lost the final in Dubai (huge congrats Barbora!) my level was good despite the infection and I gave it all I could at the moment. I can see that some of you have higher expectations of me but well. I’m just human. I will keep my standards high, I will enjoy my time on tour and keep working hard. At the end of the day that is all I can control. My effort and engagement. Thank you all for the support and see you soon!” Swiatek said in a message posted on her Twitter.
