Dominic Thiem paid tribute to the great Roger Federer as he believes that the Swiss is the greatest tennis icon and that no one will have a bigger impact in tennis. Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, is considered the greatest ambassador tennis has ever had. Despite the fact that Federer did not finish with the all-time Grand Slam record, Thiem believes that there are things in which no one can ever surpass the Swiss great. “Yes, it’s definitely possible. No matter how much others win, Rafa, Novak or someone in the future, Roger will always be the one who has influenced tennis the most. I think he influenced all sports, because of his character, his special aura. I think he took tennis to another level and the whole world benefited from it. We all have to be very grateful to him,” Thiem told dnevnik.hr. Now that Federer is retired, the battle for the all-time Grand Slam record has come down to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. After winning this year’s Australian Open, Novak Djokovic tied Rafael Nadal on the list of all-time Grand Slam records, with 22 Majors. When asked about the debate on the greatest of all time, Thiem said that he believes that the one with the most Grand Slam titles deserves to be considered the GOAT. “In my personal opinion, the Grand Slams. Because those are the four most important tournaments in tennis, everything else is fine, but it’s not the same. The Grand Slams are what really counts, so in the end, whoever wins more Grand Slams will probably be the biggest in (tennis) history,” Thiem explained. The Austrian is a four-time Grand Slam finalist and has a Major in his collection. In his first two Grand Slam finals at the French Open, Thiem was defeated by Rafael Nadal. In the 2020 Australian Open final, Thiem lost to Novak Djokovic in five sets.
Thiem dropped to World No. 96 in the ATP rankings
Dominic Thiem will make his way back into the top 10 of the ATP rankings sooner rather than later, reckons Borna Coric. “I am sure Domi [Thiem] will be back in top 10 soon,” wrote Coric on his Instagram stories on Sunday. “Always a privilege to share a court with great champion of our sport, Dominic Thiem,” he added. “Had a pretty good perspective on the shot. World class from Thiem,” wrote the Croatian in his tweet. He has now dropped to World No. 96 in the ATP rankings.
