The SaberCats have found their replacement for Dillon Smit, and it’s ironically a former teammate of the now-retired scrumhalf. Andre Warner makes the move from the Lions in South Africa, though he was most recently on a short-term contract with French Pro D2 side Agen.
Warner, 30, is one year Smit’s junior but at 6′ (1.84m) is a much taller and more physical player. He made his senior provincial debut with the Blue Bulls in 2015 and made the jump to Super Rugby two years later. After a brief spell with Stade Francais in 2018 he would start five games for the Bulls in 2019, but then signed for the Lions the following year.
Carlo de Nysschen remains as Houston’s primary domestic option. A third scrumhalf is yet to be confirmed. Devereaux Ferris left part-way through the 2023 season to join the Seawolves and Nick Boyer returned to San Diego during the off-season.
At the same time the club have announced the signing of former ATL winger Jeremy Misailegalu. The 30-year-old, who can also play outside center, played with Seattle in 2018 and Utah in 2019, then emerging as a first choice player for the Ratlers in 2020 and 2021. His contract was abruptly terminated ahead of the 2022 season after he violated the league’s personal conduct policy.
