Helldivers 2 In Turmoil Amid PlayStation Network Drama

on

Helldivers 2 was released on February 8 to an overwhelmingly positive reception. It became regarded as an overnight success, taking the gaming world by storm and shattering the expectations of Arrowhead, the game’s developer. Sadly, a recent change was announced that decimated the community, specifically those playing the game on PC. It was recently revealed that to play Helldivers 2 on PC, you’ll need to make and link a PlayStation Network account.

That decision came as a complete surprise and it wasn’t taken well by the community. It led the CEO of Arrowhead, Johan Pilestedt, to make a public apology and offer an explanation. He stressed that this wasn’t a decision at his firm, but it was instead made higher up, with the mandate coming down from Sony’s leadership team. Per recent guidelines, some PlayStation games on PC will now require you to log into a PSN account before you can play them.

And So Begins The Bombing

In typical fashion, the disappointed and dismayed gamers took to Steam to review bomb Helldivers 2 following the announcement. In a matter of hours, the game scooped up thousands of negative reviews, and at the time of writing, the game’s recent review count sits at a rating of ‘Mostly Negative’. Previously, Helldivers 2 boasted stellar ratings, and the negativity has risen only because of this decision by Sony.

However, another problem has now surfaced. There are only 69 countries in the world where the PlayStation Network operates, which means that some players will be locked out of Helldivers 2 unless something on Sony’s end suddenly shifts. These are the countries where PSN doesn’t fully operate (all of which could be impacted by this change):

Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Benin, Bhutan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Botswana, Brunei, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, CAR, Chad, Comoros, DRC, Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Dominica, Dominican Republic, East Timor, Egypt, Guinea, Eritrea, Estonia, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Fiji, Gabon, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Granada, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Latvia, Lesotho, Libera, Libya, Liechtenstein, Lithuana, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mauritius, Micronesia, Moldova, Monaco, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nauru, Nepal, Niger, Nigera, North Macedonia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenadines, Samoa, San Marino, Sao, Tome, Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Suriname.

Despite these recent changes, Helldivers 2’s player count has remained fairly consistent on PC. That doesn’t mean that the community isn’t rebelling, though. There have been more than a few complaints lobbied at Arrowhead Studios in recent days, and with Sony yet to officially comment on the situation, it’s only going to get worse.
