Guardians’ Trevor Stephan, Daniel Espino To Undergo Surgery

on

Guardians setup man Trevor Stephan will be undergoing elbow surgery within the next week or two, reports Mandy Bell of MLB.com (X links). The team had shut Stephan down for three weeks in late February, but the discomfort in his arm persisted and subsequent testing has revealed that his ulnar collateral ligament is “not providing adequate stability.” It’s not yet clear what type of procedure Stephan will require, and a timetable for the right-hander’s return is thus unknown.

There’s further discouraging news on righty Daniel Espino — formerly one of the top prospects in all of baseball. The 23-year-old righty, who missed the entire 2023 season due to a capsule tear that required shoulder surgery, underwent a second shoulder procedure yesterday — this one to repair new capsule damage as well as his rotator cuff. He’ll miss the entire 2024 season.

More to come.
