Is McAtamney competition for Graham Gano, or just a caddy?

Is undrafted free agent placekicker Jude McAtamney on the New York Giants’ 90-man roster to compete for the job against veteran kicker Graham Gano? Or, is he on the roster simply to lighten Gano’s workload as the 37-year-old comes back from knee surgery that landed him on IR in 2023.

McAtamney played Gaelic football in his native Ireland. He decided to try American football after seeing another Irishman from Gaelic football commit to be a placekicker at Georgia Tech in 2020.

Per ESPN, McAtamney landed an opportunity at Division II Chowan University in 2021, and parlayed that into a chance to kick for Rutgers in 2022.

McAtamney made 23 of 24 extra points and 12 of 18 field goals for the Scarlet Knights in 2022. He was used exclusively as a kickoff specialist by Rutgers in 2023, except for one missed field goal attempt.

With no 2023 placekicking on his resume, McAtamney told ESPN he made 17 of 20 kicks at Rutgers’ Pro Day, landed an invite to the Giants’ Local Pro Day and made 10 of 10 kicks there.
