New York Giants news for Monday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

‘Things I think’ about the Giants’ 2024 NFL Draft

BBV’s Ed Valentine points out that all draft board take in to consideration need and value:

General managers love to tell you they draft the best player available regardless of need. Phooey! Don’t let Schoen ever tell you he doesn’t draft for need. Now, the ‘value’ part comes in in terms of picking the right positions/players at the right time. I don’t think Schoen reaches for players. Need, though, is always a big part of the consideration.

Without doubt, positional value matters to Schoen…it is amazing how often his picks correlate directly to needs. It is amazing how often you think the Giants need A, B and C and at some point in the draft A, B and C have been selected. Maybe not in your order of priority, but as much as possible they get addressed.

So, as much as the GM plays the positional value game and lets the draft board speak to him it is pretty apparent that draft board is slanted toward what the organization believes its needs are. That, to be honest, is probably human nature.

Giants moving forward with Daniel Jones after push for Drake Maye falls short | New York Post

“For me, I said it in January after the season ended, our expectation was Daniel would be our starter and we brought Drew Lock in to be his backup and Tommy [DeVito] has been the backup,’’ general manager Joe Schoen said Saturday after the Giants were finally off the clock. “That’s where we are and that’s where we’re going to move forward into the season. Daniel’s still on contract for three more years. So, as it sits today, that’s where we are.’’

Giants’ post-draft reality: The team is the future, not Daniel Jones | The Record

The Record’s Art Stapleton on moving on from Gettlemen, Barkley and, eventually, Jones:

The identity of the Giants, for better or worse, is changing. There are new faces that embody what Schoen and Daboll believe this team is all about. Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns and Bobby Okereke are defensive leaders, bringing a significant part of the fan base back to when the Giants were competing for Super Bowls with the Big Blue Wrecking Crew of Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick to the NASCAR packages of Tom Coughlin, Steve Spagnuolo and Perry Fewell.

The offense is eventually going to be the Nabers show with Andrew Thomas as the cornerstone up front, with Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt ideally developing into game-changing receivers and the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Jones is the quarterback for this season, at least to start. Lock and DeVito are here to compete.

Giants GM Joe Schoen preaching patience. Why that’s going to be a tough sell | The Athletic

The Athletic Dan Duggan on the tightrope Schoel and Daboll are attempting to walk on:

That’s why Schoen lamenting that people want “instant gratification” falls flat. This draft focused on filling needs to fortify the roster led by the quarterback Schoen chose to pay $40 million per year. The expectation for a team in this stage of its build should be to win, but Schoen’s comments about Jones hardly generate enthusiasm.

The Giants aren’t in a desirable place. And there won’t be much patience from a restless fan base for Schoen and Daboll to get the Giants back on track.

Fourth-round pick Theo Johnson (No. 107 overall) was Gregg Rosenthal’s second-favorite tight end in this class because of his athletic profile and movement skills. He provides some insurance for Darren Waller, who has been openly considering retirement. The Giants continue to seek juice for their offense despite passing on quarterbacks. J.J. McCarthy would have been a reach at No. 6 overall; it made sense to pass on drafting another potential Daniel Jones after they struck out on their attempt to trade up for Drake Maye, especially when a talent like Malik Nabers was on the board.

That’s a wrap on the Giants’ 2024 NFL Draft.

General manager Joe Schoen and Co. did a decent job addressing some of Big Blue’s glaring position needs — especially by picking up wide receiver Malik Nabers (sixth overall) and safety Tyler Nubin (47th overall) — but their 2024 trajectory hasn’t exactly shot up.
