FIFA says more about the new Club World Cup

FIFA had already adopted the new format of the Club World Cup. Exit the traditional annual edition, make way for a new competition taking place every four years, like the World Cup. In the explanations of FIFA (to read below), we therefore learn that Real Madrid and Chelsea, winners of the two previous editions of the Champions League, are for example already qualified for the new format of the Club World Cup in 2025, and that the winners of the 2023 and 2024 editions will also get their ticket for this event, whose host country is not yet known. FIFA also clarified that a ” A ceiling of two clubs per country will be applied to the access list, with an exception in the event that more than two clubs from the same country win the confederation’s first club competition during the four-year period. Understand then that the Premier League could not then send 3 same clubs to the World Cup, unless 3 different teams win the C1 over a period of four years.

The principles of access to the new format of the Club World Cup, from 2025

• For confederations with more than four slots (Europe and South America): access for the champions of the four previous editions of the confederation’s first club competition (Champions League for Europe) + additional teams to be determined by a club ranking based on the same four-year period (between 2021 and 2024).

• For confederations with four slots: access for the champions of the four previous editions of the confederation’s first club competition.

• For confederations with a slot: access for the highest ranked club among the champions of the confederation’s first club competition during the four-year period.
