Ferrero: “Carlos Alcaraz has difficulties on clay-court”

Carlos Alcaraz presents himself as defending champion in Madrid, having already defended his title in Barcelona against Stefanos Tsitsipas. It is the first defense of such an important tournament for the Flushing Meadows champion and his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, also a Grand Slam champion and former world number one, who believes in his potential.

Ferrero told to Cadena Ser, on the eve of the Madrid tournament: “I really like the courage he has on the court, seeing how he scores as soon as he can. He plays with joy and enjoys himself because he conveys the feeling that everything depends on him, and then he has a lot of hand at net. Sometimes I try to tell him to play tough, not to miss, but usually I don’t stop him much because I know how he likes to play.”

A point of reference on and off the court: this is what Alcaraz is becoming on and off the tennis court.

Ferrero expalained: “Carlos is understanding what it means to be a point of reference, he knows he is an example for many people. He’s keeping his feet on the ground and I can help him a lot because I’ve been there.”

Tennis has changed compared to what it was before, when the Spaniard was active: “I didn’t like the fact that the chair umpires were policemen, now we have a lot of peace of mind to be able to communicate with tennis, our lives have changed.

The worst thing we can do is trust ourselves, every game is dangerous if you have a bad day and you have to go tournament by tournament. It’s a bit difficult for him to start playing on clay, but when he prepares well it’s very difficult to win on this surface.”

Alcaraz is waiting to know who will be his first opponent in Madrid, with Ferrero always present in his box.
