Eugenio López Chacarra makes his big debut

on

Eugenio López Chacarra will finally make his debut in the Majors after qualifying for the US Open, which will take place from June 13th to 16th at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. Chacarra will be joined, for now, by only one other Spaniard, Jon Rahm, the winner of the tournament in 2021. He will be the sixty-ninth Spanish golfer to compete in a major in their history.

Chacarra, who dominated at various points during the qualifying held at the Dallas Athletic Club, ultimately shot 136 strokes over the two rounds of 18 holes that had to be completed on the blue and gold courses. He finished second, just one stroke behind Colombian Nicolás Echevarría, who led the group of 11 players who gained entry to the third major of the season through this route. After an impeccable initial round of 66 strokes, only two bogeys in the last seven holes knocked him off the top spot.

The 24-year-old golfer from Madrid continues to steadily climb in his career. In 2022, he won the Singapore tournament of the LIV Golf Invitational Series, and last year, he triumphed in an International event on the Asian Tour at St. Andrews. Now, he arrives at the first major of his career.

Meanwhile, Sergio García, who also shot a 66 in the morning, stumbled on a par 5 – double bogey – and had to go to a playoff with six other players. Only one spot was left, and the Borriol native made a bogey in the playoff, leaving him as the first alternate at this venue, awaiting any mishaps that might force one of the eleven qualifiers to withdraw. Among those who made it through was, among others, Italian Francesco Molinari, the winner of the British Open in 2018. Eugenio López Chacarra will finally make his debut in the Majors after qualifying for the US Open.
