Eugenie Bouchard suffered food poisoning in Auckland and that was the reason why she was forced to withdraw from her ASB Classic qualifying final round match.
On Saturday, Bouchard defeated Ann Li 6-4 6-3 in the Auckland qualifying first round.
The following day, Bouchard was scheduled to meet Katie Volynets in the qualifying final round.
“Got really bad food poisoning Saturday night. Was up all night throwing up. So sad I had to withdraw from my match in Auckland. This is me waiting to see the doc Sunday morning,” Bouchard announced through her Instagram Story.
Bouchard was weak and could barely eat on Sunday.
In another story, Bouchard revealed: “My attempt at dinner – Sunday night – only got through about five pieces of pasta. Slept 12 hours last night and feel so much better now (Monday).”
Bouchard fears a bad omen
“Is it a bad omen that I spent the first 8 hours of 2023 clinging to the toilet? Let me know,” Bouchard asked her fans in another story.

Unfortunately for Bouchard, her Auckland campaign came to an end on a very unfortunate.
Bouchard, who made back-to-back Auckland quarterfinals in 2019 and 2020, was hoping to start her 2023 season with a good Auckland result.
On Saturday, Bouchard made a positive start to her season by beating Li 6-4 6-3.
Bouchard got broken in the first game of the match but broke back Li immediately in the following game to tie the set to one game apiece.
After recovering from an early break down, Bouchard broke Li again in the 10th game – when the American was serving to stay in the first set.
In the second set, Bouchard earned the first break in the fourth game to open a 3-1 lead.
Up by a set and a break, Bouchard held on to her serve the rest of the match to complete a two-set win.
It remains to be seen when will Bouchard return to action.
