Could Higgins wind up out West if the Bengals opt to trade him?

With wide receiver Tee Higgins not yet signing his franchise tag for the 2024 season and having formally requested a trade, there’s a slim chance the Cincinnati Bengals will have no choice but to move on from the 25-year-old star.

If the Bengals do trade him, several suitors would likely line up, but ESPN’s Matt Bowen believes that one team in the AFC West makes the most sense.

That team: the Los Angeles Chargers.

“The Chargers drafted rookie receiver Ladd McConkey, who has the route traits to live in the middle of the field, and added veteran DJ Chark Jr. And if Higgins — who requested a trade this offseason — does get moved before the start of the 2024 season, he would immediately upgrade the Chargers’ offense as a three-level target for quarterback Justin Herbert,” Bowen work.

“With a pass game that will be heavily schemed and include play-action elements under new coach Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers could create both isolation matchups and open voids for Higgins to produce. He has 24 career TDs over four seasons, and he totaled 656 yards last year after breaking 1,000 in back-to-back seasons. (For what it’s worth, Higgins is anticipating staying in Cincinnati).”

It’s still highly unlikely the Bengals will trade Higgins this year, but in the NFL, never say never.

For a trade to happen, it feels like the likeliest scenario would be if the Bengals struggle and opt to move Higgins at the NFL Trade Deadline. But even that scenario is highly unlikely.
