ESPN predicts Titans will hire Lions DC Aaron Glenn

Insider sources are claiming the Tennessee Titans possess interest in Detroit Linos DC Aaron Glenn

Dan Graziano of ESPN is predicting that the Tennessee Titans will hire Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to be their next head coach. The Titans are expected to complete a virtual interview with Glenn later this week. NFL guidelines allows the Titans to complete virtual interviews with coaches who are still coaching in the divisional round.

“My prediction for the next Titans coach: Aaron Glenn, Graziano wrote. I’ve been told by a couple of people close to this situation to keep an eye on Glenn as a strong candidate. The Titans are casting a wide and diverse net, and this is one of the tougher ones to call at this point, but Glenn has appeal as a former player, as a part of what Dan Campbell has built in Detroit and as the coordinator who graded out the best of any on either side of the ball in a recent NFLPA poll of players. He will get a head coach job sooner rather than later, and he could be the guy the Titans pick to work with GM Ran Carthon on their rebuild.”

Glenn’s Lions defeated the Los Angeles Rams on Super Wild Card Weekend. The Rams were held to 23 points and only converted 3-of-9 third down attempts. Sean McVay’s usually effective rushing attack was limited to 68 rushing yards, although they did gain 357 yards through the air.

Glenn’s defense has improved every season throughout his three-year tenure as Lions DC, but so has the personnel (Aidan Hutchinson was a game changer). This season, the Lions finished 19th in total yards allowed per contest (336.1), 27th in pass yards (247.4/game), second in rush yards (88.8), and 23rd in points (23.2). Coordinating success or failure doesn’t always equal head coaching success or failure, but it’s worth acknowledging that Mike Vrabel’s defense was better than Glenn’s in multiple categories this year.

It would be somewhat disappointing if the Titans dismissed Vrabel to hire another defensive-minded former player to be the head coach. Prioritizing Will Levis’ development is of the utmost importance. What kind of offensive staff could Glenn assemble?
