Elijah Adebayo: Analyzing Luton Town hero in front of goal

on

Luton’s team has plenty of heroes who have been with the team from Luke Berry who has climbed along with the team from League one to Premier League. Elijah Adebayo is another from that mold where he’s been with Luton long enough from their championship days and despite enduring doubts if he could replicate numbers at the highest level, he’s on course for a 10+ goals in his 1st season in PL, with 9 goals currently and more to add in the remaining games. So what exactly does Elijah do at Luton and what part did Rob Edwards has played in it?

Adebayo’s Profile as a forward is very unique, despite the fact he’s been around English football for a considerable time. His play around both the flanks, closer to halfspace or far from it is phenomenal. When you look at Pic 1, you see a forward that operates in all the important zones including zone 14, while being subtle to take shots only inside the box, meaning he’s more often putting himself in the service for his teammates outside the box to benefit from theirs inside the box.

Luton’s a team that doesn’t usually maintain ton of possession but it allows Adebayo to express himself across the pitch. But usually with what Adebayo gets, he operates in an efficient way, most often expressive and progressive, a credit due to be given for Rob Edwards despite the difficulties he’s been enduring to keep Luton out of relegation.

Vid 1: Adebayo’s overall game with Luton

Adebayo’s credentials as a well rounded forward was evident from his Championship days. His strength and technique in tight areas to usually pin defenders in wide areas ensures he opens more space for players to either be played onto inside the Box or make runs more on the far post Blindside areas to get into end of the crosses.

Under Rob Edwards, Adebayo has generally played on Paper as a Center forward in a 3-4-2-1 but usually operates in the inside spaces more often than not as we saw in Pic 1. This role sees him usually use his strength and technique to play wingers around him on and then try to make runs to meet their return passes. It’s no surprise that Adebayo’s profile traits that were evident in Championship level could translate to Premier League level.

Such was his stocks just until his recent unfortunate injury that Elijah managed to become the 1st player to score a PL hattrick in 2024, leading Luton against Brighton in PL this season.

As like any player, Adebayo’s bucket list certainly contains the hope that he could represent and play national team football. While born in England, Adebayo sees opportunity to represent his roots, the Super eagles in International stage. If he gets back to the form he was in pre-injury, it wouldn’t or should be a surprise why he shouldn’t represent the Super Eagles despite them boasting some phenomenal strikers that represent them already.
