Dominik Mysterio turned heel on his father Eddie Rey at WWE’s Clash at the Castle 2022, which eventually led to the legendary luchador whooping his son’s ass on the grand stage at WrestleMania 39 in 2023.

In a new interview with Sports Illustrated, Dirty Dom said he turned down an invitation to a low-key family dinner after the match, in order to protect the business:

“I just beat the f— out of him. I wasn’t going to dinner with him. So I had a street hot dog and spent the night in my hotel…I was raised on that old-school love of the business. That’s a big part of our family dynamic. We have a lot of respect for the Mysterio name and this sport.

I’m carrying lineage, my family, and history on my shoulders. My six godfathers, who are all legends, I’m not going to let them down.”

I’d be curious to know if Dirty Dom upgraded his dinner plans at all after losing to his deadbeat dad once again this year at WrestleMania 40.

Dominik plans to go down as “the greatest of all the Mysterios,” and he credits Konnan for not blowing smoke up his ass about his flaws in the ring:

“He doesn’t sugarcoat. Personally, that’s something I needed. I don’t want to say the wrong thing and get in trouble here, but starting off in the business, as the son of Rey Mysterio, you don’t know what’s what. I could have a sh—- match and people would say, ‘That was really good’ just to be on my good side. You don’t know what’s it’s real or not. But then I’d get a call from Konnan. He’d say, ‘Your punches looked like shit,’ ‘You need to work on this,’ or ‘Stop doing the 619 if you’re not going to do it properly.’

Konnan gave me tough love, right from when I started training with him and my dad. He still keeps an eye out on my matches, and I’m a student of the game–so I’m always willing to learn from someone who revolutionized the sport.”

Dominik may still be one of the younger stars on WWE’s roster, but even longtime greats like AJ Styles marvel at how he consistently receives some of the loudest boos on Raw. He still has a long road ahead of him in terms of living up to the Mysterio name, but Dirty Dom is off to a good start as a member of The Judgment Day.

Where do you hope to see Dominik’s WWE career to go from here, after he returns from his current elbow injury? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
